OTDR rental cost: rent or buy?
Typical US rates: Fiber Instrument Sales lists single-mode 1310/1550 nm OTDR rentals at $288/week, $460 for 2 weeks and $575 for 4 weeks. A 1310/1550/1650 nm PON OTDR is $350/week ($700 for 4 weeks), and their single-mode/quad tier is $400/week ($800 for 4 weeks).
Elsewhere: an EXFO MaxTester 730C hires for £350/week ex VAT from CMW (UK) and CA$445/week from CNT Automation (Canada). Leasametric rents the newer 730D for €175/week in the EU.
Buying instead: new entry OTDRs we've seen include the EXFO MaxTester 715D at $3,795, the VIAVI T-BERD 2000 OTDR at $4,774.76 and the VIAVI SmartOTDR 126A at $5,235.63. Used/refurbished earlier-generation SmartOTDR E126A units were listed at $2,199–$2,799. Add a yearly calibration: $405–$550 for EXFO OTDRs at third-party labs, or Aumictech's $450 flat rate.
Break-even: at $288/week, a $5,236 SmartOTDR costs the same as about 18 weekly rentals. At the 4-week rate ($575), it's about 9 months of continuous rental. If you shoot OTDR traces on only a handful of jobs a year, rent. If a tech needs one most weeks, buy, and a refurbished unit with a fresh calibration certificate is the value pick.
